There are many great reed makers offering handmade bassoon reeds,
but few are able to produce their reeds using the full Herzberg system.

About Behr Bassoon Reeds

Professionally Crafted
Herzberg Style Bassoon Reeds

I make one style of reed that works for all levels of player.

For the beginning player to a demanding professional, these reeds just work!

Each reed is play-tested multiple times on my 12k series Heckel to ensure an even pitch, smooth response, and consistent tone across the entire range of the bassoon.

Reeds are ready to go out of the box, but like any reed, they will continue to break in over time.

I take great care in crafting these to the highest standard so that every reed sold is a reed which I would be comfortable playing in a professional orchestra.

  • Reeds are for $25 each plus $7 flat rate shipping.
  • Orders of 4 reeds or more qualify for free domestic shipping.
  • All orders are shipped in biodegradable boxes through USPS.
*No more wasted plastic reed vials.
  • Reeds will come in assorted thread colors, but if you have a color request, please note that on the order form and I will do my best!
  • Please soak newly received reeds for 5-10 minutes before the first use to ensure the reed is fully re-hydrated from shipping.

Reed Making Process

Each reed is made from selected tube cane which is then processed in-house to guarantee the highest levels of accuracy and consistency.

All reeds are made using the revered Herzberg shape and profile.

I am incredibly fortunate to be able to make my reeds on one of only sixty Herzberg profilers ever made. This provides the highest level of accuracy possible in the profile of each piece of cane.

Herzberg Projects Machine #54

Once profiled, reeds are formed and allowed to dry.

Reeds are scraped following the contours of profile in a standard thumbnail pattern.

*Please note that the scrape may slightly vary between reeds and may not show as defined of a thumbnail pattern as pictured above. Cane will darken with use and the scraped silhouette will become more prominent over time.

Reeds measure approximately 55cm in total with a blade length between 27mm and 28mm from the collar.

A Bit More Info!

Reeds are ready to go straight out of the box but still leave room for individual adjustments.

These reeds will play best with lighter embouchure pressure and proper air support.

Every player’s set-up is unique, and we all have different demands that we ask of our reeds. With this in mind, I strive to build a little extra room in the scrape to allow individual players to make adjustments.

Additionally, reeds are made at sea level in Savannah and then shipped all over the country. With all of the changes in climate and elevation they may see, a few adjustments may be needed to get the most from your reeds!
